Hey WiBit Friends! I cannot express how grateful I am for your patience while I have been working through this database crisis. As of right now, WiBit.Net is back online!
It has been a very difficult time for me, my family, and for WiBit.Net. From the web server logs, I can see that lots of folks are checking in to see on the progress and that makes me feel pretty hopeful that we can overcome this issue. Your support during this tough spot means the world to me!
I have put in some measures to keep the database backed up on a frequent basis to make sure that this type of problem is avoided in the future. The new backup system is automated and it will allow us to come back up super fast if something like this were to occur again. The next time the site goes down it will most likely be a server upgrade, or a data migration rather than a crisis!
I also took time during this outage to work on the underlying code to improve performance and lighten the footprint on the server so the code can more efficiently run using fewer resources. I tested as many features as I could, however, I may have missed a few so please let me know if you run across something that looks weird or isn’t working quite right. I am aware that the video player needs an upgrade. I have been meaning to do this for a while now! It functions, but when videos change it gets small in some browsers (going full screen fixes the issue). The player we are using is called Projekktor, which isn’t even an active project anymore, so I will be seeking a new player. I already have one in mind that I have used in other projects, so stay tuned for an update on that. UPDATE: I couldn’t sleep the same evening I posted this blog, so I went ahead and upgraded the video player. You should check it out!
The site content is opened up to everyone with a (free) WiBit.Net account for the next 2 months. If you had an account in December 2016, it will still be there. If not, you will need to create a new one. At the moment, I need to run the site on lower spec hardware until I recover from the financial losses I endured as a result of this crisis. Once things get going again I can scale back up. So continued and/or new support as a sponsor will help get us there, quicker!
If you notice any serious performance problems, email me ([email protected]) or contact me on any of our social media platforms. As mentioned, I have done a lot to limit the footprint on the server, however, now that I am paranoid about the database, regular backups will be using server resources. I am not sure how this will impact routine usage of the website yet. So, we will see how this goes.
This event has obviously put the breaks on stuff I was working on. Even when the site is back up and running, I will still need to keep an eye on how things are going. Once things are relatively smooth, I need to take a breather! I have been going 24x7 with literally no sleep for days, and since I am on my own it has been quite a lot of work for a single person. Once the site is back on its feet, I will be working on some new content. More to come on that soon.
So, come on back! It’s 2016 all over again, so let’s party! Crack open your favorite beverage and enjoy the content!!!
Please turn off your ad blockers to help support the site. Also, if you would like to help us move beyond this and grow I would be forever grateful if you sponsor the website! You’ll notice the sponsorship rates are significantly lower and if you register as a sponsor the rate will stay the same when the price eventually goes back up. Your sponsorships will help me grow, staff back up, get more content out, and work on WiBit.Net 3.0.
Thank you so much for all your support over the years, and welcome back!
